Inspection Bodies
IAF supports member inspection bodies operating in the automotive ecosystem by providing a structured forum for technical alignment, consistent inspection practice, and recognition pathways that follow committee review under IAQC oversight after membership.
Scope of inspection bodies within IAF membership
Inspection bodies in the IAF community are organizations performing independent or in-house inspections of products, components, processes, or installations relevant to automotive supply chains. This can include incoming inspection, in-process verification, final inspection, and field or service-related inspections, as applicable to the member’s scope.
IAF is a membership-based federation and does not act as a regulator. Any IAF recognition or listing is available only after membership and is subject to technical committee review and IAQC (International Automotive Quality Council) oversight.
What members typically align on
IAF provides a practical structure for inspection bodies to align methods, documentation, competence expectations, and interfaces with other conformity assessment functions across the automotive value chain.
Inspection scope definition
Establishing clear scope statements for inspection activities (object of inspection, methods, limitations, and reporting boundaries) to support consistent interpretation by customers and stakeholders.
Reporting and traceability practices
Common expectations for inspection records, data integrity, photo/measurement evidence, revision control, and traceability to drawings, specifications, and inspection plans.
Competence and impartiality
Discussion of competence management (qualification, authorization, and ongoing evaluation) and impartiality safeguards appropriate to the inspection body’s operating model.
Interface with labs, certification, and OEM requirements
Alignment on handoffs between inspection and testing, how nonconformities are escalated, and how inspection outcomes integrate with supplier quality processes and customer-specific requirements.
Membership pathway and recognition approach
Inspection bodies may apply for IAF membership under the Conformity Assessment Bodies service area. Applications are reviewed against published membership criteria, including organizational profile, declared scope, competence arrangements, and documented processes relevant to inspection activities.
Where recognition, listings, or program participation are offered, they are not automatic. They are evaluated after membership through the relevant technical committee process and are overseen by IAQC to support consistent governance and confidence in outcomes.
How inspection bodies connect to IAF governance
Inspection body topics are handled through IAF’s committee structure for Conformity Assessment Bodies, with defined review steps, documented decisions, and escalation routes as needed. IAQC oversight supports consistency across committees, helping ensure that guidance and any post-membership recognition activities are applied in a transparent and repeatable manner.
