The International Automotive Federation (IAF) has begun early-stage development work for the AutoID™ programme, marking the start of a gradual and structured exploration phase focused on identity, traceability and technical clarity within the automotive ecosystem.
At this stage, activities are centred on research, internal analysis and conceptual design rather than deployment. The objective is to examine how a neutral identity and reference framework could support clearer interpretation of technical scope, evidence references and lifecycle status across diverse automotive domains.
IAF teams are reviewing existing industry practices, regulatory boundaries and technical documentation models to ensure that any future AutoID™ structure remains complementary to established systems such as homologation, VIN-based identification and safety testing.
Particular emphasis is being placed on neutrality, governance safeguards and avoidance of market access decisions. IAF underlines that AutoID™ is not intended to function as a certification or approval mechanism, but rather as a reference layer designed to improve transparency and comparability.
