Safety & Crashworthiness Committee

The Safety & Crashworthiness Committee leads the Federation’s mission to reduce harm on roads by developing evidence-based safety standards, interpreting crash data, and shaping consistent evaluation criteria for vehicles, systems, and components. It converts technical insight into practical, verifiable requirements—so that safer designs reach the market faster and stay compliant throughout their lifecycle.

Within the Federation, this committee acts as the central forum for passive and active safety topics, bringing together engineers, test laboratories, human-factors specialists, data analysts and industry practitioners. It also coordinates closely with internal programs responsible for conformity assessment and product surveillance to ensure that safety performance is measurable, repeatable and traceable.

Outcomes include structured test methods, evaluation matrices, data models for crash analytics, and implementation guidance for manufacturers, laboratories and assessors—enabling a common language for safety performance.

What This Committee Does

It maintains safety-related standards, analyses crash and field data, and ensures that technical requirements are coherent, transparent and testable. The committee manages cross-functional workstreams covering occupant protection, structural integrity, restraint systems, active-safety assistance and post-crash requirements.

Mandate & Scope

Maintain and evolve safety standards; define test methods and acceptance criteria; consolidate crash analytics; issue guidance for consistent application across products and markets.

Structure & Governance

Multidisciplinary membership with balanced representation by stakeholder type and region. Chairs and secretariat coordinate agendas, ballots and publication flows; short-term task forces can be launched for fast-moving topics.

Workstreams

Occupant protection & crashworthiness; restraints & interiors; active-safety assistance; body structure & energy management; child-safety interfaces; post-crash & rescue information.

Coordination

Close liaison with internal conformity and recognition programs; alignment with Technical Advisory Board for cross-standard coherence; collaboration with Market Surveillance on field-performance feedback loops.

How the Committee Operates

The committee works through scheduled plenaries and focused task forces. Proposals enter via issue papers, are scoped in charter notes, and progress through drafts, member ballots and publication with supporting test guides and implementation notes.

Draft-to-Publication Lifecycle
  • Issue paper & scope confirmation
  • Drafting & evidence review
  • Member consultation & ballot
  • Final edit, approval, publication
  • Implementation notes & Q&A updates
Key Deliverables
  • Safety Standard revisions & test method updates
  • Crash & field-performance analytics bulletins
  • Evaluation matrices & acceptance criteria
  • Implementation guides for labs & manufacturers
Who Can Join

Vehicle safety engineers, crash-test lab leads, biomechanics researchers, HMI/ADAS safety integrators, quality & compliance professionals, academic and industry experts with demonstrable expertise.

Members are expected to follow conflict-of-interest, confidentiality and ethics policies.

Meetings & Decision-Making

Regular plenaries (virtual/hybrid) with published agendas and minutes. Decisions are recorded and tracked in an issues log; ballots follow documented rules to ensure balanced stakeholder input.

Task forces meet as needed and report progress back to the committee chair.

How the Federation Supports This Committee

Secretariat services, document control, ballot management, research support and data tools enable the committee to focus on technical content while ensuring process integrity and transparency.

Process & Document Control

Versioning, comment management, ballots, and publication workflows aligned to Federation rules.

Crash Data & Analytics

Data models, dashboards and evidence templates to standardize inputs and strengthen conclusions.

Cross-Committee Alignment

Technical Advisory Board checks for coherence; Market Surveillance feeds field-performance learnings.

Ethics & Confidentiality

Clear rules for conflicts, data protection, and fair participation—documented and enforceable.
