Inspector & Examiner Qualification Schemes
A membership-based framework for defining, assessing, and maintaining inspector and examiner competence across automotive-related activities, with recognition outcomes available only after committee review under IAQC oversight.
Purpose and scope
Inspector & Examiner Qualification Schemes support consistent competence expectations for professionals who evaluate products, processes, documentation, and test evidence within automotive supply chains and research environments. The schemes are designed for use by member organisations and affiliated certification & qualification bodies to align role profiles, assessment methods, and ongoing competence maintenance.
IAF operates as a membership-based federation and does not act as a regulator. Any recognition or approval associated with a scheme is considered only after membership and is subject to committee review and International Automotive Quality Council (IAQC) oversight.
What the schemes typically include
Member-aligned schemes are structured to be auditable, role-specific, and repeatable across organisations, while allowing controlled tailoring for different technical domains and maturity levels.
Role profiles and competence criteria
Defined inspector/examiner levels, prerequisite experience, technical knowledge areas, and behavioural competencies mapped to the intended scope of evaluation activities.
Assessment and evidence requirements
Documented assessment routes such as written exams, practical evaluations, witnessed inspections, case reviews, and evidence logs with clear pass/fail rules.
Qualification maintenance and revalidation
Ongoing competence controls including CPD expectations, periodic re-assessment, ethics/independence declarations, and mechanisms for suspension or reinstatement when needed.
Scheme governance and consistency controls
Version control, impartiality safeguards, assessor qualification requirements, and calibration practices to support consistent outcomes across participating member organisations.
How member organisations use these schemes
Qualification schemes may be used to support internal competence frameworks, supplier evaluation programmes, laboratory and inspection activity assurance, and structured pathways for developing inspectors and examiners in specialised technical areas. They also provide a common language for competence when collaborating across industry, academia, and research partners.
Where a member seeks IAF recognition of a scheme or associated programme outcomes, the request is handled through the relevant committee pathway and reviewed under IAQC oversight. Recognition is not automatic and is contingent on meeting membership requirements and documented scheme criteria.
Governance connection within IAF membership
Inspector & Examiner Qualification Schemes are maintained as membership resources: proposed updates, interpretation questions, and recognition requests are routed through committee review processes, with IAQC oversight to support consistency, impartiality, and documented decision-making across participating members and qualification bodies.
