Road Safety & Consumer Protection Roles

How safety, consumer, and public interest organisations contribute within IAF’s membership-based collaboration model—supporting shared expectations, transparent practices, and consistent quality governance under committee review and IAQC oversight.

Purpose of these roles within IAF

Safety, consumer, and public interest organisations participate in IAF as members to strengthen how road safety and consumer protection considerations are reflected in shared automotive quality and assurance discussions. Their role is to bring structured stakeholder perspectives, practical evidence, and user-impact considerations into cross-industry workstreams.

IAF is not a regulator and does not confer legal authority. Any IAF recognition or approval is available only after membership and is subject to committee review and International Automotive Quality Council (IAQC) oversight, consistent with the defined scope of the relevant programme.

Typical contributions and responsibilities

Member organisations in this category contribute through structured participation, documented inputs, and governance-aligned review activities. The focus is on clarity, traceability, and balanced stakeholder engagement across road safety and consumer protection topics.

Stakeholder perspective and prioritisation

Provide structured input on user-impact, risk prioritisation, and emerging concerns, helping committees consider how quality and assurance practices align with road safety and consumer expectations.

Evidence-based submissions

Contribute documented observations, case learnings, and research summaries suitable for committee review, with clear sources, assumptions, and limitations to support traceable decision-making.

Participation in review and consultation cycles

Engage in consultation rounds, comment resolution, and scoped reviews of draft guidance or programme materials, following IAF procedures and respecting confidentiality and conflict-of-interest requirements.

Coordination across members and committees

Support alignment between consumer/public interest viewpoints and technical discussions by working through designated committees, ensuring issues are routed, recorded, and addressed within the agreed governance framework.

Boundaries, expectations, and recognition pathway

These roles are designed to strengthen transparency and consistency in collaborative work, not to replace regulatory functions or create legal determinations. Member participation should be objective, documented, and aligned to the defined scope of IAF programmes and committee charters.

Where IAF offers recognition or approval within a programme, it is considered only after membership is established and after the relevant committee review process, with IAQC oversight. Outcomes are limited to the programme scope and documented criteria, and do not imply regulatory status.

Connection to IAF governance and IAQC oversight

Safety, consumer, and public interest organisations contribute through IAF’s membership governance structure, using committee-led processes for agenda setting, documentation, review, and decision recording. IAQC oversight supports consistency, impartiality, and adherence to the approved procedures for any recognition or approval activities conducted within IAF’s defined scope.
