Certification Bodies
IAF membership for certification bodies supports consistent, transparent certification practices across the automotive supply chain through shared criteria, committee review, and IAQC oversight following membership.
Role of certification bodies within IAF
Certification bodies (CBs) provide independent, third-party certification services against management system and program requirements used by automotive organizations. Within IAF, CB membership creates a structured way to align approaches to auditing, certification decision-making, and ongoing surveillance expectations.
IAF is membership-based and does not act as a regulator. Any IAF recognition or approval related to CB participation occurs only after membership is established and is subject to committee review and oversight by the International Automotive Quality Council (IAQC).
What CB membership engagement typically covers
Membership activities focus on consistency and confidence in certification outcomes by clarifying expectations, improving comparability of practices, and supporting effective governance and escalation pathways.
Scope and eligibility alignment
Clarification of CB participation scope, applicable schemes/programs, and baseline eligibility expectations used for membership review and ongoing engagement.
Documented processes and evidence
Review of how certification decisions are supported by documented methods, audit evidence, competence records, and controlled reporting for traceability.
Consistency of audit and decision practices
Discussion of approaches that support consistent interpretation of requirements, nonconformity grading, corrective action verification, and certification decision independence.
Interfaces with other CABs and stakeholders
Defined communication paths with accreditation bodies, clients, and other conformity assessment bodies to support issue escalation, feedback, and coordinated improvements.
Membership and review pathway
CBs seeking participation typically provide organizational details, scope of certification activities, and supporting information needed for committee evaluation. The review process focuses on whether the CB’s governance, competence management, and operational controls align with IAF membership expectations for the automotive context.
Where recognition or approval is applicable, it is not automatic and is not granted prior to membership. Outcomes are determined through committee review with IAQC oversight, including any conditions, follow-up actions, or periodic re-evaluation expectations.
Governance and IAQC oversight
Certification body participation is managed through IAF’s committee structure to ensure consistent application of membership criteria and transparent handling of technical questions. The International Automotive Quality Council (IAQC) provides oversight of review outcomes and governance processes to support impartiality, consistency, and confidence in IAF’s membership-based recognition activities.
