Technical Services & Validation Centres
IAF’s Technical Services & Validation Centres membership area supports organisations that perform testing, validation, and technical evaluations used within automotive quality and conformity assessment workflows, with recognition considered after membership through committee review under IAQC oversight.
Scope of this membership area
Technical Services & Validation Centres include laboratories and engineering organisations that generate objective evidence through test execution, measurement, inspection, validation, and technical reporting. This can cover component and system testing, materials evaluation, software and electronics validation, and other engineering assessments that support product and process assurance across the supply chain.
IAF is a membership-based federation and does not act as a regulator. Any IAF recognition or listing related to this area is considered only after membership and is subject to committee review and IAQC (International Automotive Quality Council) oversight, based on documented competence, governance alignment, and consistent application of agreed procedures.
What IAF assesses and coordinates for member centres
The focus is on technical integrity, traceability of evidence, and repeatability of outcomes—so that test and validation outputs can be relied upon within member-led conformity assessment and quality assurance activities.
Test governance and method control
Review of how test methods are selected, controlled, and updated, including versioning, deviations, and documented acceptance criteria to ensure consistent application across projects.
Reporting, traceability, and records
Expectations for clear technical reporting, traceable raw data, retained records, and controlled templates so results can be reviewed, repeated, and audited when required by member programmes.
Competence and impartiality safeguards
Consideration of personnel competence management, training, authorisations, and impartiality controls (including conflict-of-interest handling) appropriate to independent technical evaluation.
Interfacing with CAB and OEM workflows
Alignment of deliverables and communication points with Conformity Assessment Bodies and customer programmes, including handling of nonconforming results, retest logic, and technical clarifications.
Membership outcomes and how recognition is handled
Membership supports structured participation in IAF technical discussions, harmonised expectations for evidence quality, and clearer interfaces between testing/validation providers and other members in the conformity assessment ecosystem. It also provides a pathway for centres to be considered for IAF recognition within defined scopes and programme rules.
Recognition is not automatic and is not a regulatory approval. Where applicable, it is considered only after membership and completion of the relevant committee review steps, with IAQC oversight, focusing on documented scope, competence controls, and consistent implementation of agreed processes.
Governance connection (IAQC oversight)
Technical Services & Validation Centres operate within IAF’s membership governance model. Committee review evaluates documented capability and scope alignment, while IAQC provides oversight to support consistency, impartiality expectations, and controlled decision-making for any recognition outcomes that may be offered within IAF programmes.
