Trainer & Instructor Qualification Criteria

Criteria used within IAF’s membership-based ecosystem to assess trainer and instructor competence for delivering automotive-related learning activities, with recognition considered only after membership and committee review under IAQC oversight.

Purpose and scope of the criteria

The Trainer & Instructor Qualification Criteria provide a consistent baseline for evaluating individuals who deliver training, workshops, or structured instruction to IAF members and participating organizations. The focus is on demonstrable competence, ethical conduct, and the ability to teach accurately and safely in an automotive context.

These criteria support comparability across training topics (e.g., quality management, manufacturing processes, safety culture, supply chain practices, and technical fundamentals) while allowing committees to apply domain-specific expectations. Any IAF recognition or listing is considered only after membership is confirmed and a committee review is completed under IAQC (International Automotive Quality Council) oversight.

Core qualification dimensions

Committees typically review evidence across the dimensions below. The exact weighting may vary by subject area, delivery format, and intended audience, but the same principles of transparency and traceability apply.

Subject-matter competence

Evidence of relevant education, professional experience, and current technical understanding aligned to the training scope, including boundaries of competence and appropriate referral for specialized topics.

Instructional design and materials control

Documented learning objectives, structured lesson plans, version-controlled materials, and clear linkage between content, activities, and assessment methods suitable for the target audience.

Delivery capability and learner evaluation

Demonstrated facilitation skills (in-person or virtual), inclusive classroom practice, and appropriate evaluation approaches (knowledge checks, practical demonstrations, or applied exercises) with documented outcomes.

Ethics, impartiality, and conflict-of-interest handling

Commitment to accurate representation of sources, avoidance of misleading claims, and disclosure/management of conflicts of interest—especially where training intersects with consulting, auditing, or commercial activity.

Evidence typically reviewed

Applicants and member organizations may be asked to provide a portfolio that supports traceable review. Examples include a curriculum vitae, training history, sample agendas and learning objectives, representative slides or handouts with revision history, and references or peer feedback relevant to the training scope.

Where appropriate, committees may also consider observation records (live or recorded sessions), assessment instruments, and documented improvement actions taken in response to learner feedback. Reviews are designed to be proportionate to the risk and complexity of the subject matter and to maintain consistency across the Professionals & Experts membership service (service_.

How qualification criteria connect to IAF governance

IAF is a membership-based federation and does not act as a regulator. Any recognition related to trainer or instructor qualification is considered only after membership is in place and is subject to committee review and documentation checks, with IAQC oversight to support consistency, integrity, and due process across learning and knowledge activities.
