Materials & Durability Tests

Materials and durability testing verifies mechanical strength, surface performance, corrosion resistance, aging behavior, and chemical robustness of parts and coatings used throughout the vehicle. Evidence ensures long-term function under real environmental and load spectra.

As a federation, the International Automotive Federation (IAF) harmonizes material test methods, recognizes laboratories, and standardizes reporting templates—so results are comparable across suppliers and accepted by OEMs and regulators with minimal re-testing.

Sub-Test Domains

Mechanical Properties

Tensile, compression, impact (Charpy/Izod), hardness, abrasion, and fatigue for metals, plastics, elastomers.

Coatings & Paint Systems

Adhesion (cross-cut/pull-off), gloss/DOI, stone-chip, abrasion, color/appearance stability and microcracking.

Corrosion & Weathering

Salt spray, cyclic corrosion, filiform, humidity, UV/solar, and temperature cycling for coated and bare substrates.

Chemical & Fluid Resistance

Fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, cleaning agents, sunscreen/cosmetics, and de-icing chemicals compatibility.

Elastomers, Seals & Adhesives

Compression set, tear/peel strength, tack/cure, and aging of seals, gaskets, tapes, and bonded joints.

Polymers & Composites Aging

Thermal/UV oxidation, creep, moisture uptake, microcrack growth, and fiber/matrix interface stability.
